    Arthur Bury(1624–1713)

English clergyman and theologian often associated with latitudinarian currents (skeptical of dogmatic rigidity and interested in Christianity's ethical core) within the Church of England. In The Naked Gospel he pressed for a simpler, less contentious Christianity, skeptical of excessive doctrinal scaffolding. His writing reflects the Restoration era's debates over authority, reason, and the essentials of faith.

A controversial rationalizing treatment of the New Testament that provoked fierce anti-Socinian/anti-deist rebuttals; it became notorious enough to be publicly condemned and ordered burned by Oxford's convocation in 1690.
