Ethnical Scriptures

    The Dial

The Dial's "Ethnical Scriptures" reflect a deliberately experimental editorial practice: to print selections from the world's "oldest ethical and religious writings … exclusive of the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures," and to begin—carefully, fragment by fragment—the larger task of collating "each nation['s] bible" by foregrounding "the grand expressions of the moral sentiment … the rules for the guidance of life … [and] the bursts of piety … to the Invisible and Eternal."

Across all installments, the editors follow a consistent approach: an umbrella title "Ethnical Scriptures," followed by minimal apparatus. The scriptures are intended to be remembered, reflected-upon, and lived.
