Emerson's library reveals an expansive archive of comparative thought. Alongside major classical authors, his books reflect a long-running interest in late Platonism and its afterlives: Thomas Taylor's translations of Plato and Plotinus, works of Proclus and Iamblichus, and related materials in Pythagorean and Neoplatonic philosophy. It also contained books associated with Christian theosophy and visionary religion, including Swedenborg, Jacob Boehme, and Hermetic texts, as well as volumes connected to South Asian and Persian traditions such as the Upanishads, the Rig-Veda, the Bhagavad-Gita, the Vishnu Purana, the Ordinances of Menu, the Desatir, and Hafiz. These holdings suggest a library shaped not by a single doctrine but by Emerson's sustained effort to place classical, Christian, and Asian materials into conversation.
