    Robert Wilkinson

Little is known of Robert Wilkinson beyond his self-identification as a "member of the Army" in his sole surviving publication. His devotional writing reflects the radical inward spirituality of the English Civil War era, critiquing superficial religion and urging readers toward a direct, spiritual encounter with Christ.

    Saint's Travel to Canaan

    Full title[show]

The saint's travel to the land of Canaan. Wherein is discovered several false rests below the spiritual coming of Christ in the saints. Together with a brief discourse of what the coming of Christ in the spirit is; who is the alone rest and center of spirits.

    The Dial's edition: London, 1650

A devotional and mystical work that uses the biblical journey into Canaan as an allegory for the soul's search for true spiritual rest. Wilkinson warns against "false rests," meaning incomplete or misleading forms of religious consolation that fall short of the inward, spiritual coming of Christ in the believer. The book is therefore both a critique of superficial religion and a guide to a more radical inward spirituality.
