    Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas

    Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas(1544–1590)

French poet whose biblical epics and cosmological verse were among the most widely read in late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe. His Divine Weekes offered a poetic account of creation and natural order, blending scripture, encyclopedic learning, and moral exhortation. Through translations—especially Josiah Sylvester's—Du Bartas became a major influence on English religious poetry.
